Structural

  1. Be watchful of cracks in foundations inside or out as this can lead to structural damage.
  2. Structural damage can cause floors, ceilings or interior walls warping or other damage.
  3. Structural damage can also cause warping or other damage to doors or windows.

Mold

  1. Watch for and eliminate any obvious growths or spores.
  2. Mold spores are easily released into the air and inhaled once air bourne. Problems resulting from this include: allergies, respiratory distress or even death from rare but highly toxic molds!

General Safety

  1. Smoke/Carbon Monoxide/C0² Detectors should be installed/maintained.
  2. Get in the annual habit of checking the batteries of existing units.
  3. Use Combination Detectors that check for multiple dangers.
  4. Keep at least 2 small fire extinguishers in the house. These should be from tested brands and should be ABC rated or "Multipurpose".
  5. Make sure everyone knows how and when to use it, it might be wise to keep it along fire escape routes instead of the back closet buried.

Utilities

  1. Know how to safely turn off main feeds for electricity, water, gas.
  2. Know what number to call for these systems (ex: Power Company, Water Company, Gas Company, etc).

Roofing

  1. Watch for missing or decaying shingles, have them replaced as soon as possible.
  2. Once water enters beneath shingles it can migrate and accumulate in attics causing dry wall damage, warped ceilings and mold.

Electrical

  1. Grounded Fault Interrupter (GFI-type) outlets should be installed around any source of water and in unfinished basements.
  2. These wall outlets have a built-in safety feature designed to prevent electrical shock in the event of a short circuit.
